Just wanted to make a small correction to a statement in this show. Justo was mention so pay browser based remote desktop clients like PC-Anywere and Logmein. Logmein base version is free event for business uses. I had a client who needed all of the features of the free version and did not want any of the feature of the paid version, so I contacted Logmein any they said companies are allowed to use the free software.

    Hey Brad!

You are right. Logmein is a free service for the base service. I was really looking to mention GoToMyPC, but for some reason, Logmein came to mind.

But really, I think perhaps remote access may have been a bad example for the use of Smoothwall and creating SSH tunnels. It is like saying VPN’s are good because you can use remote desktop (RDP) to your work computer. A VPN gives you RDP, but much more than that. It gives you access inside your companies network and whatever resources are available to you within the network.

Smoothwall and SSH tunnels can give you just about the same benefit as a VPN. You can also do file transfers and the such. Heck, I even was able to print to my home network printer via SSH!

Still, I figured many people would be interested in connecting remotely to their home computer that it would be a good example. Yet, it may have backfired since after hearing the Podcast, I think it drew too much attention.

Thanks for listening, and Thank You, Rich and Keith, for having me on the show!

    Re: Episode 40

Good show. I had three comments –

    1. In E40 you talked about using a SSH tunnel over an unsecured wireless. You recommended the smoothwall, which is great – but I also would recommend the DD-WRT project. This mod of the common Linksys Wireless router is easy and provides TONS of features only found in more expensive APs – captive portal, RADIUS support, wireless power control, etc. In addition, the DD-WRT appliance runs Linux and can be used to create the SSH tunnel.

    2. Also, you mentioned that login credentials could be passed in clear text over unsecured WiFi. However, nearly all major websites that require credentials secure those transactions with SSL certificates. So, the username/password is secured with SSL, but all other information is transmitted in clear text.

    3. You guys seem like big Microsoft proponents, specifically what caused you to choose a BSD DNS Server?

    Thanks for the show.
